Groundwater Contamination

چکیده

INTRODUCTION In the southern United States, chemicals are an integral part of the management of bare-root nurseries. The rationale for using chemicals is based on economics as they can reduce hand labor, improve the use of valuable seed, and increase seedling performance. The cost of all chemicals associated with loblolly pine seedling production averages less than 0.2 cent per seedling. The cost of nitrogen (N) fertilizers (including usage for cover crops) is less than 0.01 cent per seedling. The most expensive chemical treatment (fumigation with methyl bromide and chloropicrin) costs about 0.15 cent per seedling. The total cost of producing a bare-root loblolly pine seedling is usually less than 2.5 cents, due in part to increased efficiencies provided by chemicals. In 1993, one nursery contracted to grow loblolly pine for as little as 1.8 cents per seedling (excluding seed cost).

Predicting geogenic arsenic contamination in shallow groundwater of south Louisiana, United States.

Groundwater contaminated with arsenic (As) threatens the health of more than 140 million people worldwide. Previous studies indicate that geology and sedimentary depositional environments are important factors controlling groundwater As contamination. The Mississippi River delta has broadly similar geology and sedimentary depositional environments to the large deltas in South and Southeast Asia...

Risk Assessment of Groundwater Contamination: A Multilevel Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation Approach Based on DRASTIC Model

Groundwater contamination is a serious threat to water supply. Risk assessment of groundwater contamination is an effective way to protect the safety of groundwater resource. Groundwater is a complex and fuzzy system with many uncertainties, which is impacted by different geological and hydrological factors. In order to deal with the uncertainty in the risk assessment of groundwater contaminati...

Groundwater Arsenic Contamination in Bangladesh: Causes, Effects and Remediation

The serious arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh has come out recently as the biggest natural calamity in the world. The people in 59 out of 64 districts comprising 126,134 km of Bangladesh are suffering due to the arsenic contamination in drinking water. Seventy five million people are at risk and 24 million are potentially exposed to arsenic contamination. Most of the recognized...

Identifying the sources of subsurface contamination at the Hanford Site in Washington using high-precision uranium isotopic measurements.

In the mid-1990s, a groundwater plume of uranium (U) was detected in monitoring wells in the B-BX-BY Waste Management Area at the Hanford Site in Washington. This area has been used since the late 1940s to store high-level radioactive waste and other products of U fuel-rod processing. Using multiple-collector ICP source magnetic sector mass spectrometry, high-precision uranium isotopic analyses...

The Property Value Impacts of Groundwater Contamination:

There are few studies examining the impacts of groundwater quality on residential property values. Using a unique dataset of groundwater well tests, we link residential transactions to home-specific contamination levels and undertake a hedonic analysis of homes in Lake County, Florida; where groundwater pollution concerns stem primarily from agricultural runoff. We find that testing and contami...
